Tears flow as Okija mourns victims of stampede

Tears flowed freely in Okija, Ihiala local government area of Anambra State on Friday, as the community mourned victims of the stampede that occurred in the area during the distribution of palliatives on December 21st, 2024.


Okija community stood still as all markets were closed for business and participants at the interdenominational service held at St Mary's Parish field adorned black attires.


The service was officiated by the Anglican Bishop of Ihiala Diocese, Most Rev Raph Okafor.


In his sermon, the Bishop Okafor consoled the families of the victims, urging the people to accept what happened as the will of Almighty God.


He urged them to pray against any reoccurrence of the tragedy in the community and appealed to the Philanthropist, Dr. Ernest Obiejesi (Obijackson), not to allow the incident discourage him from his service to humanity.


With tears rolling down his cheeks, Dr Obiejesi, while condoling the families, assured that he would continue to support the families of the victims.


He said: "Despite the handiwork of the devil, I will not stop empowering my people. I will continue to provide for my people as long as my foundation exists.


"I have been providing this gesture for the past 15 years without such incident. I and my foundation will continue to empower the vulnerable families of Okija Kingdom."


He commended the traditional ruler of the town, Igwe Emeka Nnamdi Okezie, for ensuring a peaceful service, describing the stampede as the worst incident his foundation has ever witnessed since its inception
