Following the killing of a woman on a traffic gridlock in Nnewi on Tuesday, the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu has set up a team to monitor the operations of Agunechemba, the new security outfit established by the state government, whose member allegedly killed the woman.

According to eyewitnesses, road users were trapped in a traffic gridlock at Ibeto junction in the industrial town when the Agunaechemba operatives arrived and attempted to clear the road for their convoy, adding that in the process, the operatives started firing gunshots and a bullet hit a woman, who was later identified as Chiamaka Okeke.

She slumped and was taken to a hospital where she was later confirmed dead by a doctor.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, SP Tochukwu Ikenga said the command is on top of the situation, adding that the command has initiated steps to identify the patrol vehicles and the operatives involved.

Ikenga said: "We have escalated the matter to the leadership of Agunaechemba to help us identify the patrol vehicles that went to Nnewi yesterday and the alleged operative who shot the gun.

CP Ikioye Orutugu has set up a monitoring team headed by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Criminal Investigations Department, CID, Awka, DCP Mantu Chong to ensure that officers are civil and are complying with the operational order.

The CP, on behalf of other security agencies expresses gratitude to the state government and some good-spirited individuals for their support. He also appreciates the coordinated approach and sacrifices of the Police and other security agencies to nip in the bud serious crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping, and other related situations, especially within this Easter period and beyond.

The CP notes that alongside our strong resolve to fight all forms of violent crimes, the operations have a window of Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and community policing principles where applicable. This will be open for those desirous of taking advantage of such avenues to resolve specific problems and issues."

"The CP has appealed for calm, as the command is working with relevant security outfits to identify the suspect and ensure justice is served. Investigations are ongoing, and further developments will be communicated."

He said that the state Police command will continue to review the operations as it progresses and explore strategies to improve safety and security in the state.
