No fewer than 10 people, including children, were feared dead in a devastating auto crash that occurred in the industrial town of Nnewi, Anambra State late Friday.
The crash, which happened along the Ugwu-Akpati Ozu area along Nnewi—Okigwe Road, near the Nnewi Police Area Command Bus Stop, involved a truck laden with cement.
Eyewitnesses attributed the crash to brake failure, which allegedly caused the driver to lose control and ram into a residential building and crushed some people, including children of the same family.
It was gathered that the driver also died in the crash, as the truck brushed against several cars, motorcycles, shops, and buildings before finally crashing into the house.
An eyewitness described the scene thus: "The incident happened when most people were at home. The loud noise from the crash alerted residents and passersby to the scene, creating a chaotic atmosphere as people tried to rescue those trapped."
"About ten people lost their lives today in the fatal accident. A 40-ft long trailer loaded with cement lost control at Ugwu Akpati Ozu, cleared off bike men and cars on its way, ran past the Area Command, and bashed into some makeshift shops and the compound at the back."
The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, spokesperson in Anambra State, Margaret Onabe, confirmed the incident and promised to provide further details.
