Joint security forces, led by the Anambra State police command have invaded and destroyed a camp allegedly set up by unknown gunmen in Nimo community, Njikoka local government area of the state.
It was gathered that the hoodlums set up the camp in a bush called Owa land some months ago, from where they launch attack in parts of the state. It also serves as an abode for keeping victims kidnapped from various parts of the state.
The leadership of the community had, on noticing the presence of the unfamiliar faces in the area, petitioned the relevant government agencies and subsequently invited soldiers who have been patrolling the community.
It was gathered that during the wee hours of the Christmas eve, security operatives stormed the bush and engaged the hoodlums in a shoot out that lasted several hours.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga, who confirmed the attack, said that 19 improvised devices were recovered.
Ikenga said: "In the early hours of December 24, 2024, a joint security operation led by the Nigeria Police Force and comprising the Military, Civil Defence, and Anambra Vigilante operatives, successfully dismantled a criminal camp located in Nimo, Njikoka local government area.
The operation resulted in the destruction of several makeshift structures within the camp, the recovery of 19 unexploded improvised explosive devices (IEDs), and inflicted significant injuries on fleeing suspects.
This decisive action followed credible intelligence on the activities of the criminal gang in the area, coupled with information obtained during the interrogation of suspects arrested in ongoing police operations across the state."
The state Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam has already commended the synergy existing among the security agencies and the vigilance of the public in providing actionable intelligence, emphasizing the importance of continued collaboration to ensure the safety and security of all residents during and after the festive season.
The Commissioner urged all proprietors of private and public hospitals to immediately report patients with bullet wounds or injuries to the nearest police station.
The command also assured the public of its unwavering commitment to maintaining security dominance through sustained patrols and targeted operations aimed at ensuring a peaceful yuletide season for all.
