Police arrest suspected kidnapper demanding N1.2m ransom in Anambra

The Anambra State Police command has arrested one Chukwuma Obi, a 32-year-old man from Umuagu Village, Igboukwu, Aguata local government area, over an allegation of kidnapping and extortion.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga said in a statement that Obi was arrested by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Squad, Enugu-Ukwu in Njikoka local government area.
According to the Police, the suspect demanded a ransom of ₦1,200,000 through threats of abduction and claiming to be a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The victim had informed the police of receiving a menacing message from Obi, who threatened to abduct him unless the ransom was paid into a specified account.
The police said that during interrogation, Obi confessed to the crime, adding that he is currently assisting the Police in identifying and apprehending his other gang members involved in the criminal activities.
Reacting on the arrest, the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, spoke of the command's commitment to pursuing all cases to ensure suspects are apprehended and justice served.
The CP urged the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest Police station, or through its emergency lines.
