The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has elected Nze Fidelis Ozichukwu Chukwu from Imo State as its new President General.
The election took place during the Ime-Obi meeting held in Enugu on Saturday. The development follows the demise of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, who passed away in July, 2024.
Ohanaeze spokesman, Dr. Alex Ogbonna , who disclosed the information, said the Imeobi/General Assembly meeting reviewed events since Iwuanyanwu's passing.
He said the Imeobi resolved to allow Imo State to complete its remaining 27 days in office, as its tenure expires on January 10, 2025, adding that the next President-General will be elected based on Ohanaeze Ndigbo's constitutional provisions.
The election of the next President-General, who will come from Rivers State, is expected to take place on January 10, 2025.
Ogbonna said notable Igbo leaders who attended the meeting lamented the chain of catastrophies that have affected Ohanaeze in recent years.
