Kidnappers abduct medical doctor in Nnewi

A medical doctor with Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, Dr Cornelius Onuigbo has been kidnapped by gunmen operating in the industrial City.

The doctor, a neurosurgeon, was kidnapped in front of his home close to the teaching hospital on Tuesday night.

Although the kidnappers had not demanded for ransom at press time, the family was said to be working to secure his release.

"The family is already working to pay for the release of the man, and I think they have refused to tell the police about this development", a source in Nnewi said.

The state police command has also confirmed the incident, adding that operatives have been fully mobilized to ensure his release.

"I am aware of the kidnap. We have already mobilized for the rescue of the doctor. The Commissioner, Obono Enaghe Itam has given orders for this, and men of the command are currently at work," the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Tochukwu Ikenga said.
