The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had said that it can only conduct by-election for Anambra South senatorial zone if formally informed of the death of the senator representing the area, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
The state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) Dr Elizabeth Agu said at a stakeholders’ dialogue organized by the International Press Centre (IPC) in Awka that it has not received any request from the Senate to conduct a by-election in Anambra South Senatorial District to replace the late Senator.
Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, who represented Anambra South Senatorial District, passed away in July 2024 and many politicians from the zone have indicated interest in their various political parties to replace him.
Agu, however, stated that INEC has prepared for the election, adding that it is ready to conduct it once the Senate submits a request to fill the vacant seat.
“INEC is ready for the Anambra South Senatorial District by-election, but the Senate must request the replacement of the vacant seat before we can conduct the election,” she said.
On the November 8 governorship election in the state, Agu urged the politicians to adhere to the rules as the state prepares for the exercise, assuring that INEC would ensure that a people’s votes count.
In his keynote lecture at the dialogue, a former REC in the state, Dr. Nkwachukwu Orji stressed the importance of public trust in successful elections.
According to him, the worrisome voter apathy indicates that there are issues with the electoral process.
Executive Director of the International Press Centre (IPC), Mr. Lanre Arogundade promised to share recommendations from the dialogue with relevant authorities as part of efforts to enhance democratic processes.
“Our aim is to gather insights from all geopolitical zones in Nigeria, focusing on rebuilding trust and fostering collaboration to improve future elections,” Arogundade said.
