Anambra's newly formed security outfit, Agunechemba, has raided the dreaded Lilu forest in Ihiala local government area, which had served as the abode for gunmen and killed at least six suspected gunmen.
Three other occupants in the forest were said to have fled their camps as the security squad stormed the area.
Information from the villagers said the Agunechemba security squad has taken control of two camps in the area, adding that the villagers have resumed their daily activities.
According to them, peace has been restored to the community as the security outfit has mounted sustained surveillance in the area.
They attributed the success of the operation to the cooperation of local residents who were tired of living under the control of the gunmen.
Lilu Community, along with Orsumoghu, Azia, Isekke, Mbosi, had been the den for gunmen activities, with reports of kidnapped victims being held in dug-out pits while awaiting ransom payments.
Also, the security squad had stormed Umuoji Community in Idemili North local government area, killing two suspected gunmen and recovering arms and charms allegedly used in previous operations.
