Anambra billionaire, Rev Sr., released after 10 days of abduction

Anambra State billionaire and Managing Director of JEZCO Oil, Chief Joseph Ezeokafor and a Reverend Sister whose identity was not given, have been released after spending 10 days with their kidnappers in Anambra State.

They were abducted at Ifite area of Awka, with the Anambra State Police command saying they were picked up at a location near Anambra - Enugu states boundary by a family member.

The state Police command said security agencies were taking steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and gather information that could assist ongoing investigations.

A statement by the police command said: "The Anambra State Police command confirms that, today, 15th August 2026, Chief J. J. Ezeokafor and a Rev. Sister, who were earlier abducted by armed criminals at Ifite-Awka, have been released and have safely returned.

"The command is currently taking necessary steps to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain relevant information that will assist ongoing investigations and identification of the perpetrators.

"The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, while commending the safe return of the victims, further directs intensified intelligence-led operations and manhunt for those responsible for the abduction."

According to the command, the ongoing operation involves the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), the Military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Agunechemba Security Operatives and other relevant security agencies.

The statement said the command appreciated members of the public for their support and cooperation, urging them to remain vigilant and provide credible and timely information that could assist security agencies in apprehending the perpetrators.

It was clear if ransom was paid before their release, particularly when their abductors had earlier demanded a ransom of N1.5 billion from the family of the businessman to secure his release.
