Former state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Anambra State, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, has expressed optimism that the party will present a strong candidate for the November 8 governorship election in the state, insisting that the party is very much in contention for the governorship.
Nwobu, while addressing reporters in Awka, observed that the problem the party had in presenting what he called 'a first eleven candidate', was due to the leadership problem it had experienced over the years.
PDP has Jude Ezenwafor as the candidate of the party for the November 8 election and it was believed that he might be substituted before the closing date for the parties to present their candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
He said: "We are still looking forward to seeing if we can put forward a credible candidate for the election. The party is strategizing and the outcome will soon be known.
Basically, PDP is seriously in contention for the November 8 governorship election. As at today, PDP is sponsoring a candidate for the election. However, we are all aware that the party has had a lot of challenges in the recent past and these challenges are not only local, but national in nature."
Anambra is one state where the party structure has not been in place for the past four years because since I left office as an elected chairman, there has not been another elected chairman. At the national level, there has been challenges in terms of who should be the national chairman and national secretary.
It is in the midst of these challenges that the time for the nomination of PDP candidate for the Anambra election came and you will agree with me that people who genuinely want to run for an election, will be very sceptical when they see that the national leadership is bedeviled with crisis.
That was what affected our ability to have strong aspirants, in spite of the fact that PDP has its roots in Anambra State, remembering that the late Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, was the starting block of the party.
To that extent, therefore, PDP should not be underated in the coming election because most people in Anambra State have a liking for the party.".
According to Nwobu, the main problem of PDP is the unbridled ambition of certain individuals in the party, whose actions are destroying the party.
